China’s European Auto Offensive: Repeating Japan’s 1980s Playbook /

English

In the third quarter of 2026, Chinese car brands outsold Japanese brands in Europe for the first time over a full quarter. In September, Chinese brands took 12.7% of the market against 11.9% for Japanese brands. Five years ago they held barely 1%.

To us, this looks familiar. In the 1970s Japanese carmakers surged into the US, taking over a fifth of the market by 1980. Washington responded with the 1981 voluntary export restraint, and Japan answered by building factories in America and moving upmarket. Its share kept rising through the decade.

Europe is now running the same play, but earlier. In 2024 the EU imposed tariffs of up to 35.3% on Chinese battery-electric cars. In 2026 it began replacing them with minimum-price commitments, and in October agreed in principle to curb Chinese hybrid imports as well.

CYJ view: minimum prices are a modern export restraint. Like the 1981 restraint, a price floor leaves the margin with the exporter rather than the importing government. That supports Chinese carmakers’ economics and pushes them toward higher-value models and local production, just as it did for Japan, whose quotas helped lead to Lexus in 1989.

The key difference is geopolitics. America welcomed Japanese plants as job creators. Chinese plants in Europe may face data-security rules and “Made in Europe” incentives, and Chinese localization is already running late.

Who feels it most. The pressure falls hardest not on Europe’s giants but on Japanese and Korean volume brands that compete on price. European groups partnering with Chinese makers gain access to their technology and cost base.

Outlook. Our base case is a 15–20% share for Chinese brands in Europe by 2030. As Japan’s experience after the 1985 Plaza Accord showed, currency and policy, not tariffs alone, will set the pace of the shift from exports to local production.
